Just saw FLD today. So Nissan is killing the Xterra. I has a sad. Pretty soon the Wrangler will be the only small-"ish" body on frame SUV you can buy.

I was just looking for info on the next gen Xterra. Guess that's not happening.
Sad news indeed, but it was going to happen, either the next refresh was going to kill it or this.

That sucks.
The first new car my wife and I purchased together was a '01 Xterra. Since it was her car, and we were living in SW OK at the time, we got a RWD automatic. If it was going to be mine, it would have been a 5-speed 4x4 and we'd probably still have it today. Good truck - we had a lot of fun with it and made a lot of memories. Sold after 7 years and 110k miles. Was still in great shape.

The 4Runner is closer in size to a Pathfinder, unless you understand "small-ish" to mean "anything smaller than a Tahoe."

You know i never think of the 4runner as being rugged or capable, at least not the newer ones.
but I guess I could be wrong. They are a bit bigger than the Xterra tho. which I don't like but other may find as more appealing. I will say this tho, the Xterra has more character.

Not surprised. I would have thought they'd update it rather than killing it off completely though.

yeah FLD has been wrong before tho. just awhile ago they claimed that the Infiniti G60 would have an engine built by Mercedes Benz. Hopefully they are wrong about this too.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The 4runner is longer, wider and slightly heavier, but its shorter and has a smaller wheelbase.

I knew this would happen eventually; ever since SUVs went mainstream, it's been common knowledge that 99% of their drivers stay on the pavement, 99% of time. The market for vehicles that have any sort of off-road capability is tiny, and already well-served by the Wrangler Unlimited, if you need more than 2 doors.
As much as everyone hates the new Cherokee, they really nailed it by building a crossover that has off-road capability as an option (Trailhawk), rather than making it something that everyone has to live with.

As far as which is the better off roader? I have no doubt in my mind the 4runner is....none.

I guess the 4Runner just looks bigger than it is. I would not have guessed they were so close in size.

No buts about it, the 4Runner is big (its almost the exact exterior dimensions and weight of my fzj80) but so is the xterra, it used to be a little guy, but it isn't anymore...like so many things these days.
